Why We Gather

There’s something to be said about the power of music and its ability to unify, change, empower, and educate. We believe its power runs deep because God created it, and that’s why we started The Sound Session. At The Sound Session, you might find a friend who feels like an answered prayer, get challenged in ways you didn’t expect, hear a song that shifts your perspective, or have a conversation that makes you feel less alone.Maybe you’ll find your church home—or discover a gift you didn’t know God placed inside you. And we want to be a part of that.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you love music and connecting with cool people, this space is for you! We always let attendees know up front that these events are strategically centered around Jesus.

Expect lots of fun, meaningful relationship building, and great music — including live performances. You’ll also find mocktails, small bites, and most importantly, lots of Jesus! Each gathering is curated to be Holy Spirit led, intentional, and joyful.

The Sound Session typically happens once a month. Since we're still in a development phase, there may occasionally be a month without an event—but we'll always communicate ahead of time and let you know why.

We welcome anyone 18 years of age and up.

No. Seven Sixteen is the name of our organization, which encompasses a variety of creative and community initiatives — all centered around Christ and music. The Sound Session is the name of the monthly events we host. We have some exciting future experiences planned, which is why the organization’s name is broader than any single event.

We’re always excited to hear from artists and organizations interested in performing or collaborating. Feel free to send us a DM or an email — that’s our preferred way to connect. We look forward to hearing your ideas!

our story

Daija P.Founder

During the summer of 2023, I'd discovered Christian rap and deep dived into its world. While driving to class one day and listening to Caleb Gordon, it dawned on me. "What if we had a Christian rap event in Charlotte?" Immediately, I'd saw what that could look like. In my little black journal (which I took with me everywhere), I began writing down all that I saw, location, timing, artists, costs, all of it. The initial excitement of such a venture eventually wore off, and I carried on with my life.Six months later, the vision came back to me and it wouldn't leave. It was then that I knew this venture wasn't a random idea, it was God's idea. Around this time, I was in my senior year at UNC Charlotte, and it just so happened that I'd come across an email to enter into an entrepreneurship competition through their Center for Entrpreneurship and Innovation. (Mind you, I'd never heard of them despite being at the school for several years).I signed up for the interest meeting but as it neared, I reached out to the organizer to express my skepticism and desire to no longer come (I didn't have anything to pitch). Before I sent the email, I'd told God if He still wanted me to go, let the organizer respond still encouraging me to go (and she did). Upon attending, I decided on pitching my blog, but it didn't seem like that was the direction I needed to go. On the walk back to my car, I said, "God, what am I going to pitch?" And it was then that He led me to the vision He'd given me six months earlier.Four rounds and lots of prayers later, I won first place and a cash prize to move forward with what you see today.

So was the food and overall hospitality. Some people I met at the July session I’m still in contact with to this day. A lot of good things came from that session."-Jordan H.
